Pack It Out!
In all environments, packing out pet waste helps protect water, wildlife, and other pets and recreationists.

WHEN to Pack Out the Poo

Doggy Doos:
  • Pick up dog waste while out in nature.
  • Pack it out.
 Doggy Don'ts:
  • Please do not leave the bag on side of the trail, park, campground, water body, or street.
BEST Method: Pick up and pack out pet waste using a bag. *Always pack out waste in desert and alpine environments.
There are products available, such as bag holders or leash attachments, to carry poop bags, so you do not have to hold it throughout your adventure.

GOOD Method: Dig a hole.
In a forest environment, if you do not have a bag, bury your pet's waste using the same method used for human waste.
  1. Walk 70 big steps from water, trails, and campsites.
  2. Use your trowel to dig a cat hole 6 to 8 inches deep.
  3. After placing poop (only poop, not poop bag or other trash) in hole, fill with dirt and disguise the area with surrounding materials such as leaves and sticks.

Tip*

Use a sealable bag to carry all poop bags.
  • Place poop bag inside sealable (zip lock) bag, seal, and place it in the bottom of or secure to the outside of your backpack.
  • You can cover the outside of the sealable bag with duct tape to prevent it ripping and avoid seeing or smelling pet waste throughout your adventure.

WHY Scoop the Poop?

Pet waste is problematic for several reasons. Waste left on the ground can be washed away by storm or irrigation water, contributing to local water quality pollution. When waste decays in the water, it uses large amounts of the oxygen, leaving less for fish and other aquatic life. Additionally, pet waste contains high levels of nutrients that can increase the growth of algae and cause harmful algal blooms.

Pet waste is harmful to human, wildlife, and other pet health. Wildlife can find and consume waste left behind, putting them at risk for diseases. Pet waste contains pathogenic bacteria and parasites that can spread through untreated water consumed by other living organisms. Waterborne pathogens can make our rivers and lakes unfit for swimming and other recreational activities. High quantities of pet waste may also lead to the need for additional water treatment before allowing municipal use.
Picking up pet waste is one of the easiest ways to make a difference to your local water quality.

Picking Up Poop is GROSS!

Swimming, fishing, and boating in water that has been contaminated by dog poop is more gross. When you use the proper equipment (doggy waste bags), you can pick up poop without touching it. If you are concerned, bring hand sanitizer or wipes with you.
